Implementing international strategy
Choosing an international strategy is only the beginning. Chapter 7 examines how managers put that strategy into action through strategic alliances, resource allocation, and operating arrangements that fit the firm’s objectives and the local environment. Successful implementation depends on compatible partners, clear responsibilities, and leadership that connects strategic decisions with everyday operations.
This week, we will examine the benefits and challenges of cross-border cooperation, including the tension between sharing knowledge and protecting competitive advantages. We will also consider implementation for small and medium-sized businesses and emerging economy firms, before exploring how managers guide and evaluate international joint ventures.
As you work through the chapter, consider a US-based company forming an international partnership. How should it choose a partner, divide authority, and assess results? What could change when government requirements, cultural expectations, or the partners’ priorities differ?
